Bradford Artist Brian Needham
I met Brian in the mid 80s when he'd moved back to Bradford from where he'd been working in South Africa. From what I'd gathered he'd opened a gallery somewhere in the area of Manor Rd along with some partners, the idea being he would produce pictures (mainly for the American market) and prints would be made therefore a fortune would ensue. Of course as with a large number of artists this of course did not happen, I have to confess I don't know the ins and outs but suffice to say that Brian went from being a happy confident in charge of his life sort of man to being morose, depressed and most times withdrawn with weeks going by where we would not see him. I think we all had the feeling that things did not go as well as he'd hoped and whilst he kept up his side of the arrangement one has to think that others perhaps didn't! The pictures show a man who could be charming moody sometimes volatile sort of man but good company nonetheless, yes of course he drank and would seek out our company from the shop, spending time with Edwin, David, Richard, Mick and myself, but they were good days when the world seemed a little simpler over a pint of beer and good human contact , I felt that he needed our company especially after locking himself away for weeks painting to get away from all the negative things that were in his life. He was not a materialistic man, selling paintings was just a way to make a living so he could paint more and when things were bad he sold them to me, a friend of mine or anyone in the Spinks Bar, I've still got a couple of them.
Years later in the nineties I came across him in a Bradford hotel and we shared a drink recounting the old days, I have to say he was looking well though. I never saw him again, reading in the paper that local Bradford artist Brian Needham had passed away, the year 2004 February. I was all the better for knowing Brian, his intellect and wit lightened many a dark evening in the Spinks Bar. I still miss him!
